Which barcode type do I need?

EAN-13 is the standard retail barcode in most of the world, and UPC-A is used in the US and Canada. Both encode product numbers issued by GS1. Code 128 can encode letters, numbers and symbols and is widely used for shipping labels, inventory and asset tags.

Do I need to buy barcode numbers?

To sell products through major retailers, you need EAN or UPC numbers licensed from GS1 in your country. For internal use, such as stock control, library items or event tickets, you can use any Code 128 value.

Frequently asked questions

What is a check digit?

The last digit of an EAN or UPC code, calculated from the others, lets scanners detect typing or reading errors. Enter 12 digits (EAN-13) or 11 digits (UPC-A) and it is added for you.

What can Code 128 contain?

Any printable ASCII characters: letters, numbers, spaces and common symbols.

What size should I print barcodes?

EAN-13 is about 37 × 26 mm at 100% size. Avoid printing smaller than 80% of that, and keep the white margins on both sides.
