BMI categories

The World Health Organization classifies adult BMI as: under 18.5 underweight, 18.5–24.9 healthy weight, 25–29.9 overweight, and 30 or more obese. Many Asian health authorities use lower cut-offs (overweight from 23, obese from 27.5) because health risks rise at lower BMI in Asian populations. Tick "Asian cut-offs" to use them.

Limitations of BMI

BMI is a quick screening number based only on height and weight. It does not distinguish muscle from fat, so athletes can show a high BMI, and it is not designed for children, teenagers or pregnant women. For a full picture, talk to a doctor, who may also look at waist size and other measurements.

Frequently asked questions

How is BMI calculated?

BMI = weight in kilograms ÷ (height in metres)². For example, 70 kg at 1.75 m gives 70 ÷ 3.06 = 22.9.

What is a healthy BMI?

For most adults, 18.5 to 24.9 (or 18.5 to 22.9 with Asian cut-offs).

Is BMI accurate for athletes?

Not always. Muscle is heavier than fat, so muscular people can have a high BMI while being healthy.
