What is JSON?

JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) is a lightweight text format for storing and exchanging data. It is used by almost every web API, configuration file and NoSQL database.

Common JSON errors

The most frequent mistakes are trailing commas after the last item, single quotes instead of double quotes, unquoted keys and missing closing brackets. The validator points to the exact position of each error.

Frequently asked questions

Is my JSON data safe?

Yes. Formatting and validation happen entirely in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server, so it is safe for API keys and private data.

What is the difference between formatting and minifying?

Formatting adds indentation and line breaks to make JSON readable. Minifying removes all unnecessary whitespace to make the file as small as possible.

Is there a size limit?

No fixed limit. Files of several megabytes format instantly on most computers.
