What is Base64?

Base64 represents binary data using 64 safe text characters (A–Z, a–z, 0–9, + and /). It makes data about 33% larger but lets it travel safely through systems that only handle text, like email, JSON and URLs.

Base64 is not encryption

Anyone can decode Base64, so never use it to protect passwords or secrets. Use it only to change how data is represented.

Frequently asked questions

Is Base64 encoding secure?

No. Base64 is an encoding, not encryption. Anyone can decode it.

What is URL-safe Base64?

A variant that uses "-" and "_" instead of "+" and "/", and drops "=" padding, so the string can be used in URLs and file names.

Why is my decoded text garbled?

The data is probably binary (like an image or ZIP), not text. Use the download button to save it as a file instead.
