Scanned PDFs
Text can only be extracted from PDFs that contain real text, such as documents exported from Word or a website. Scanned pages are just pictures of text; if a PDF has no text layer, the tool tells you, and an OCR tool is needed to read it.
Layout
Plain text has no columns, fonts or tables. Lines are kept in reading order, but complex layouts such as multi-column pages and tables may need tidying after extraction.
Frequently asked questions
Why is some text missing or jumbled?
Some PDFs store text in an unusual order or as outlines rather than characters. Text in images cannot be extracted without OCR.
Does it work with password-protected PDFs?
Not yet. Remove the password first.
Is there a page limit?
No fixed limit; very long documents just take a little longer.
