Common image sizes
Instagram posts: 1080×1080 (square) or 1080×1350 (portrait). YouTube thumbnails: 1280×720. Facebook cover: 820×312. Full HD wallpaper: 1920×1080. For website images, 1200–1920 pixels wide is usually enough.
Resizing vs. compressing
Resizing changes the number of pixels; compressing changes how efficiently those pixels are stored. Making a large photo smaller in pixels is often the quickest way to shrink its file size, too.
Frequently asked questions
Can I resize to an exact size like 1080×1080?
Yes. Turn off "Lock aspect ratio" and enter both width and height. Note that the image will be stretched if its proportions are different.
What if I only enter the width?
With the aspect ratio locked, the height is calculated automatically so the image keeps its proportions.
Does making an image bigger improve quality?
No. Enlarging adds pixels but cannot add detail, so upscaled images can look soft.
