What is a Unix timestamp?

A Unix timestamp (or epoch time) is the number of seconds since 1 January 1970 00:00:00 UTC. It is the standard way computers, databases and APIs store points in time, because it does not depend on time zones or date formats.

Seconds vs. milliseconds

Most Unix tools and languages like Python and PHP use seconds (10 digits today). JavaScript and Java use milliseconds (13 digits). This converter detects which one you pasted from its length.

Frequently asked questions

What is the year 2038 problem?

Systems that store timestamps as signed 32-bit integers overflow on 19 January 2038. Modern systems use 64-bit values and are not affected.

Does a Unix timestamp include a time zone?

No. It always counts from UTC. Time zones only matter when you display it as a date.

Can timestamps be negative?

Yes. Negative values are dates before 1 January 1970.
