v4 or v7?
Version 4 UUIDs are fully random and the most widely supported. Version 7 UUIDs start with a timestamp, so they sort in creation order, which keeps database indexes compact and fast. Use v7 for new database primary keys when your stack supports it.
Can two UUIDs collide?
A v4 UUID has 122 random bits. You would need to generate about a billion UUIDs per second for 85 years to reach a 50% chance of a single duplicate.
Frequently asked questions
Is a GUID the same as a UUID?
Yes. GUID is Microsoft's name for a UUID. The format is identical.
Are these UUIDs safe to use as secrets?
They are unpredictable, but use a dedicated token or password generator for secrets. UUIDs are designed to be unique, not secret.
What is the format?
32 hexadecimal digits in groups of 8-4-4-4-12, e.g. 3f2b7a1c-9d4e-4f6a-8b2c-1d3e5f7a9b0c.
