What is nisab?
Nisab is the minimum wealth a Muslim must own for one lunar year before Zakat is due. It equals 87.48 grams of gold or 612.36 grams of silver. Many scholars recommend the silver nisab because it is lower, so more people pay and more is given to those in need; others use gold. You can choose either.
What is zakatable?
Cash at home and in bank accounts, gold and silver (jewellery included according to many scholars), shares and investments, business stock and money others owe you that you expect to receive. Your home, car, furniture and personal items are not zakatable.

Should I use the gold or silver nisab?
Both are valid opinions. The silver nisab is lower and many scholars recommend it today; follow the guidance of your scholar.
Is this a religious ruling?
