How it hits the exact size
The tool tries different compression levels and picks the highest quality that still fits under your limit. If even strong compression is not enough, the image is scaled down a little at a time until it fits, so you always get the sharpest image that meets the requirement.
Tips for application forms
Check both the file-size limit and the required dimensions; many forms specify both, for example "200×230 pixels, 20–50 KB". Enter the dimensions in the width and height boxes and the tool resizes before compressing. Photos are saved as JPG, the format almost every form accepts.
Frequently asked questions
Why is the result a little under the target?
JPG size changes in steps, so the tool lands just under your limit (usually within a few percent) to make sure the form accepts it.
What if my form also has a minimum size, like 20–50 KB?
Set the target to the maximum (50 KB). The result will be just under it, which is above most minimums.
Can I compress a PNG signature?
Yes. It is converted to JPG with a white background, which forms accept and which compresses much better than PNG.
