How GPA is calculated
Each grade has a point value (A = 4.0, B = 3.0 and so on). Multiply each course's grade points by its credit hours, add these up, and divide by the total credit hours. A 4-credit course therefore counts more than a 2-credit one.
Calculating CGPA across semesters
Cumulative GPA combines all semesters, weighted by credits: (previous CGPA × previous credits + this semester's grade points) ÷ (previous credits + this semester's credits).
Frequently asked questions
Which grade scale is used?
A/A+ = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B− = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C− = 1.7, D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0, F = 0. Check your institution's policy, as some use slightly different values.
Do failed courses count?
Yes. An F adds credit hours with 0 points, which lowers the GPA, as at most universities.
What is the difference between GPA and CGPA?
GPA usually means one semester; CGPA (cumulative GPA) covers all semesters so far.
