How percentage is calculated
Percentage = obtained marks ÷ total marks × 100. For example, 850 out of 1100 is 77.27%. The overall percentage uses the sum of all obtained marks divided by the sum of all total marks, so subjects with more marks count more.
Grades
The grade shown uses a common board scale: A+ 80% and above, A 70–79, B 60–69, C 50–59, D 40–49, E 33–39 and F below 33. Universities and boards differ, so check your institution's scale.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate percentage from marks?
Divide obtained marks by total marks and multiply by 100. 450 out of 500 is 90%.
Is the overall percentage the average of subject percentages?
No. It is total obtained marks divided by total marks, which weights subjects by their marks. This is how boards calculate it.
What is the passing percentage?
It is often 33% or 40%, depending on the board or university.
