When to darken an image

Darkening fixes overexposed photos taken in bright sun, and it is the standard trick for hero images and slide backgrounds: a darker image makes white text on top of it far more readable.

Darkening vs. lowering contrast

Darkening shifts every pixel toward black. Lowering contrast pulls light and dark tones toward the middle. For overexposed photos, darken first, then adjust contrast if needed.

Frequently asked questions

Can I recover blown-out highlights?

Not completely. Pure white areas contain no detail, so darkening turns them grey rather than restoring what was lost.

How dark should a background image be for text?

A reduction of 40–60 usually gives white text enough contrast. Use our Color Contrast Checker to confirm readability.

Are my images uploaded?

No. All processing happens in your browser.
