How the brightening works

Each pixel is moved part of the way toward white, in proportion to how far it is from white. Dark areas gain the most, while areas that are already bright change only a little, so highlights do not turn into flat white patches.

Tips for dark photos

Small adjustments of 15–30 usually look most natural. If the photo looks washed out after brightening, increase the contrast slightly with the Adjust Contrast tool.

Frequently asked questions

Will brightening reduce quality?

PNG files keep exact quality. JPG and WebP files are re-saved at high quality (92%), which looks the same for almost all photos.

Can I brighten many photos at once?

Yes. Add up to 100 images and the same adjustment is applied to all of them.

Can I darken a photo instead?

Yes. Drag the slider to the left, or use the Decrease Brightness tool.
