Pixelating to hide information

Pixelation replaces each block of pixels with a single colour, permanently discarding the detail inside. Use a large block size (20 pixels or more) for text such as passwords or ID numbers so it cannot be recovered.

Making pixel art

Small block sizes (4–10 pixels) on simple images such as logos, icons or cartoons give a classic pixel-art style. Resize the image to a small size first for an even blockier look.

Frequently asked questions

Can pixelation be undone?

No. The original detail is discarded. Keep a copy of the original if you might need it.

What block size should I use to hide text?

At least twice the height of the text, and never smaller than 20 pixels for sensitive information.

Can I pixelate only part of a photo?

This tool pixelates the whole image. Crop the part you want to keep sharp, or combine images in an editor.
